Kalasha community gathering during the Uchal summer harvest festival

Overview

Uchal Kalash Summer Festival is one of the top cultural festivals of Pakistan. The Kalasha tribe celebrates many festivals around the year. The three main Kalash festivals are Chilam Joshi (spring festival), Choimus (winter festival) and Uchal (summer festival). Uchal Kalash Summer Festival is an amazing cultural experience in the Hindu Kush mountain ranges.

UNESCO listed Kalash culture as "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in November 2018. The decision was announced during the 13th session of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Committee meeting organised in Mauritius.

Cultural significance

During Uchal, Kalasha families gather to offer thanks for the season's harvest. Traditional foods prepared from locally grown crops and dairy products are shared among community members.

The festival features traditional music, singing, and energetic dances that continue throughout the celebrations. Participants wear their traditional clothing, preserving customs that have been passed down through generations.

Visitor experience

Uchal offers visitors a chance to experience Kalasha culture during the lush summer season when the valleys are at their most beautiful. Travelers can enjoy cultural performances, local hospitality, and breathtaking views of the Hindu Kush mountains while learning about the traditions of the Kalasha people.

Highlights

Uchal festival has a lot to offer. Below are the main highlights of this journey.
